FAQs

Please keep coming back to these FAQs - we plan to update them as questions get asked and answered in discussion forums and interviews regarding PBR

How frequently can I change my profile?

As often as you like - we will encourage users to change and update their profile very frequently to reflect the current nature of their household.

What will happen when I change my profile?

You will immediately start seeing PBR advertisements which will be appropriate for your new profile which will replace your old profile. So if your new profile says that you now live in a home with a garden you may start seeing PBR advertisements for gardening products that you had never seen before if you had previously said that you lived in university lodgings. If your old profile had said that you owned a car but your new profile says that you no longer own a car but own a bicycle instead then you might no longer see PBR advertisements for car insurance but could start seeing advertisements for cycling safety courses and cycling insurance services.

    So can I lie?

Yes of course you can. It is going to be your STB and your profile and you can tell it anything that you want about your household. No personal data from the STB is communicated to Playback Holdings Limited or our advertisers. You could choose to tell lots of lies about your household - the people in it, what you spend your money on and what interests you and your family. But we don't believe that you will find it beneficial to tell us lies.

    Why is that?

Because it is not in your interests to tell us lies about yourself. If you are a family of tea drinking pensioners there is no advantage in telling us that you drink lots of cola. Not only will you be shown adverts that do not interest you - in trying to switch you from one brand to another. But you will be offered money off vouchers for something you do not want or need - e.g. 20% off the price of your next 2 litre bottle of "ToothRotter" (or whatever the special offer is at the time). If instead you have told us that you are a family of tea drinking pensioners then you will could see PBR advertisements for different teas and could receive money off vouchers that would be of real help in stretching the household budget - since it will be money off things that you really do use and buy.

Do I really control all my personal data on the STB?

Yes. You will be able to prove it to yourself by changing your profile to something silly and seeing what you are shown in advertisements and offered in vouchers. If you want to say you are 105 years of age, living alone and male you will be able to do so. [But remember that if you do say you are 105 years of age, living alone and male you could then receive PBR advertisements for products like Viagra, Equity Release Pension Products, pre-pay funeral plans and BOGOF vouchers on incontinence underpants - things which will have no value or relevance for you in real life]

Can I use the privacy of my STB to help my family?

Yes. Once everyone is satisfied that the personal data on a STB is completely under the users control and does not leak away from it to advertisers (or us) we can ask the householder questions such as "Does anyone in your household smoke cigarettes?" Today many smokers when asked this question will lie, because they know that if they answer "yes" they will have to pay more for all sorts of products and services where a weighted health risk is factored into the price. In contrast if we know that several thousand households have said that there is someone in the household who smokes cigarettes we can approach the NHS and offer a targeted advertising campaign with special vouchers for the NHS Anti-Smoking programme.

We can do the same with lots of other embarrassing problems, lack of reading skills, drug addiction, alcohol abuse etc. Because nobody will ever know whether you are choosing to lie to the STB and because the personal data always remains under your control all 'admissions' to the STB profile are safe and private.

I don't have the latest smart phone - will I be able to receive PBR cash and product vouchers?

Yes, our vouchers will be sent as SMS messages so every mobile phone can receive them. On a smart phone they get will be converted into barcode vouchers which can be scanned by the barcode reader at the till in the shop.

But all PayPoint shops can redeem the SMS message instead at their yellow keypad terminals - it just takes them a little longer to do so.

You will probably find that there is a PayPoint store very near to your home - within easy walking or cycling distance. They currently tend to be small local convenience stores with long opening hours that serve their local community. As well as buying groceries and other day to day products in a PayPoint store you can also pay many different utility bills; gas, electricity, mobile phone etc. If you pay for your gas or electricity using pre-payment keys you can charge these up at a PayPoint store too.

How can I find the nearest PayPoint store to me?

Just pop your postcode into this link. PayPoint stores are convenient places to pay your regular bills in cash, charge up your meter or top-up your mobile, as well as shop for your day to day needs. There are nearly 23,500 places in the UK and Ireland you can pay - in newsagents, convenience stores, supermarkets and garages, most open long hours, many seven days a week.
